A dictionary of arts, manufactures and mines : containing a clear exposition of their principles and practice. sed shape, is in astate to receive the drawing of the pattern ; this being put on, a blunt steel tool, or burn-isher, or die, is to be applied successively to all those parts of the pattern intended to bein relief, and, at the same time, is to be driven very cautiously, without breaking thegrain of the wood, till the depth of the depression is equal to the intended prominenceof the figures. - The ground is then to be reduced by planing or filing to the level of thedepressed part; after which, the piece of wood being placed in water, either hot or cold, the part previously depressed will rise to its former height, and will then form an embossedpattern, which may be finished by the usual operations of carving. For this invention the Society of Arts voted to Mr. Streaker their silver Isis medal andten guineas. EMBOSSING CLOTH. Mr. Thomas Greig, of Rose Bank, near Bury, patentedan invention, in November, 1835, which consists in an ingenious construction of machinery 28 434 EMBOSSING 370* for both embossing and printins: silk, cotton, woollen cloth, paper, and other fabrics, in one or more colors, at one operation. Figs. 370, 370* represent three distinct printing cylinders of copper, or other suitnble material, a, n, c, withtheir necessary appen-danges for printing threedifferent colors uponthe fabric as it passesthrough the machine teither of these cylindersA, B, or c, may be em-ployed as an embossingcylinder, without per-forming the printing pro-cess, or may be made toeflect both operations atthe same time. The fabric or goodsto be operated upon be-ing first wound tishtlyupon a roller, tliat rolleris to be mounted uponan axle or pivot, bearingin arms or brackets atthe back of the machine,as shown at n. Fromthis roller the fabrica a a a is conducted be-tween tension rails, andpassed under the bedcylinder or paper bowl E, and from thence pro-ceeds over
