LIBBKTY TREB of Boston met under a large tree, which was situated onWashington, directly opposite Boylston street, and formedthemselves into an organization known as Sons of Liberty—the tree thtfs acquiring the name of Liberty Tree. Underits branches nearly all the meetings that were called to resentthe stamp act were held. These meetings were so largelyattended that the great open space around it was of the remonstrances of the people having any effectupon the Crown, the odious taxes were in instances increased,and by 1770 the people were wrought almost to a state offrenzy, which culminated on the 5th of March, when on Statestreet seven citizens were killed and several wounded by theBritish soldiers, who fired upon them. The affair grew outof a trivial incident, but such was the feeling which grewfrom this massacre that the British troops were withdrawnfrom the town. From this time on meetings, which were 107
