This edition contains a number of wood-cuts, all rather coarselyengraved, though some of them are designed with such spirit as to benot unworthy of Holbein himseK, as will be apparent from two or threeof the following specimens. In the first, Cain killing Abel, the attitudeof Abel, and the action of Cain, sufficiently indicate that the originaldesigner understood the human figure well, and could draw it with greatforce in a position which it is most difficult to No. 1. The figure of Abraham in No. 2 bears in some parts considerableresemblance to that of the same subject given as a specimen of Holbeins WOOD ENGEAVING. 387 Bible cuts at page 368 ; but there are several others in the work whichare much more like his style ; and which, perhaps, might be copied from
