Louis Pasteur (1822-95), French chemist and microbiologist. This double-exposure image shows one of his microscopes and part of a statue, both exhibits at the Pasteur Museum, Paris. Pasteur's early research in fermentation led to his invention of \pasteurization\", a brief heating of a foodstuff (eg milk) as a preservative measure. He then turned to the biology of bacteria. In 1879 he noticed the effect of stored (\"attenuated\") cultures of bacteria as a vaccine, notably against anthrax. Pasteur also developed a vaccine against the rabies virus, making him world famous. The Institut Pasteur was built in Paris in 1888."
