In 1806 he enteredthe Polytechnic School after having studied at theCentral School of Fontainebleau under Billy, andlater at the College Henri IV with Cauchy. In1808 he was sent to the military school (dapplication)at Metz, which he left the following year with therank of second lieutenant. During two and a halfyears, he fought under (Jeneral Suchet in the Spanishcampaign, distinguishing himself at several of theimportant sieges. Ill health obliged him to ask fora leave of absence. He was raised to the rank ofcaptain, made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour,and nominated to the new position of assistant in-spector of studies at the Polytechnic School. During BEDARD 383 BEDE. Antoine-Cesar Becquerel the invasion of 1814 he resumed military servicefor a time, but was soon retired with the rank ofchef de bataillon. A change of career then became necessary. Aftersome hesitation, he settled down to the real work ofhis life, the study and advancement of the science ofelectricity. Becquerels achievements are numerous and combatedVoltas contacttheory of theelectromotiveforce in a celland showed thatthe real sourceof voltaic elec-tricity is to befound in chemi-cal action. Thatin fact, the gen-eration of elec-tricity in anycase is possibleonly where thereis chemical ac-tion, frictionalwork, or differ-ence of tempera-ture. He ob-served the dia-magnetie prop-erties of themetal antimonybefore Faraday, and constructed a constant cellwith two liquids which was the forerunner of thewell-known Daniell cell. Hi
