The measurements at zero tonicity were carried out in distilled water and therefore this point represents the respiration in the absence of phosphate. this was 5% greater than the activity in M phosphate buffer. Although this difference is slight, it does agree with the value that would be expected on the basis of data shown in Figures 2 and 3. A decrease in the phosphate concentration from M to M would bring about a 3% decrease in the metabolic activity (Fig. 2), whereas a change in the tonicity of the medium from a sodium chloride equivalent of M to M would bring about a 13% increase in the meta- bolic activity. Therefore in the subsequent studies we used a M Na2HPO4- KH,PO4 buffer, pH , which has a tonicity equivalent to M Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ); Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ).
