Clinical memoirs on the diseases of women . ied, alum injections, baths, and mercury. On the Stli of June, matters remaining in much the same condition,a cold douche was ordered, immediately after which abdominal andpelvic pains came on, and increased in severity towards day, there was a good deal of fever, and pain over the lowerpart of the body, which was aggravated by pressure, but there wasno nausea, vomiting, or rigors. The vagina was hot and very painfulto the touch. Twenty leeches were applied to the iliac foss?e, andin the evening she had two rigors. On the 11th she was somewhat better ; there was less pain andfever; no swelling could be felt in either iliac fossa; in the posteriorcul-de-sac a tumour could be distinctly felt, of the shape representedin the annexed sketch (Fig. 7). This tumour was tender on pressure, and jdaced immediately belhndthe cervix, which it pushed against the pubis; it did not encroachupon the lateral culs-de-sac. It was rounded, somewhat hard, and KTIOLOGY. 09 Slic was ordered seemed composed of a number of smaller tumours, mercury pills (of Dupuytren), baths, poultices, and rest. On the 16th she was no better, had hadslight rigors, and the abdominal tender-ness had extended all over, but was worstiu the iliac fossffi. Defalcation and mic-turition were painful, the tumour had in-creased rather than otherwise, the cervixl)eing jammed against the pubis, and therectum flattened, the tumour between thetwo being of great size. The os was patu-lous, and surrounded with granular ulcera-tion of a deep red colour. On the 30th of June the retro-uterine tumour had sensibly dimin-ished, and the tenderness was principally hmited to the right side ;there was much less fever, and the rigors had ceased, but there wassome tenderness in both lateral culs-de-sac. The cervix deviated fromleft to right, and was lower. The finger could pass between thecervix and pubis, where the anterior cul-de-sac was felt to be free, except that on deep
