The LAW is an extinct volcano formed around 400 million years ago, the 572-foot peak is the city's most distinctive landmark and an enduring attraction for visitors and locals. Central to Dundee’s defenses for thousands of years, the Law was used as Iron Age hill fort and prehistoric graves dating to about 1500 BC have been uncovered on its slopes. Roman pottery dating from the 1st century AD has also been discovered. The memorial is lit with a large flame on a number of significant days, 25th September (in memory of the Battle of Loos - in which many members of the local Black Watch regiment lost their lives) The British offensive mounted in 1915 on the Western Front during World War I. 24th October (United Nations Day), 11th November (Armistice Day) and Remembrance Sunday
