Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). This bird is found throughout the northern hemisphere, inhabiting open and semi-open land. Those in the most northerly regions migrate southwards for the winter. The golden eagle, which is named for the golden feathers on the nape of its neck, can grow to nearly a metre in length and can have a wingspan of up to metres. It preys on small to mid-size mammals and birds, including mice, hares and gamebirds. It will also eat carrion when necessary.
