A 1770 engraving of Pope Gregory I (also known as Saint Gregory the Great) who was pontiff from AD590 to AD604. He was the 64th pope. It was he who introduced the plainchant singing known as Gregorian Chant. In this image he is shown dictating his holy ideas to a scribe.
