Maisonneuve,as though to challenge the implied suggestion of cowardice at hisunwillingness to meet the Indians, remained on the outside untilhis last follower was safe, and just as he was entering he wasattacked by the Indian Chief, whom he slew at a single blow, whichdisaster so disheartened the besiegers that they withdrew for theseason, and the little settlement was saved.
