John Walker, an English Druggist, Was the Inventor In 1827. In the nineteenth century—the cen-tury in which so many wonderfulthings were done—the fourth step inthe development of the match wastaken. In 1827, John Walker, a drug-gist in a small English town, tippeda splint with sulphur, chlorate of pot-ash, and sulphid of antimony, andrubbed it on sandpaper, and it burstinto flame. The druggist had discov-ered the first friction-chemical match,the kind we use to-day. It was calledfriction-
