Levada in Madeira, 2170 kms of artifical irrigation water channels built with great difficulty in this mountaineous country.

Like many countries, Medeira has abundant rainfall in its mountaineous northern and central regions but the agricultural lands of the south are arid. An ingenious system of narrow water transfer channels - called levadas - and tunnels (over 2170 kms - 1350 miles) have been constructed with great difficulty in the moutains, orginally by using slave labour. The most ancient are around 500 years old and the latest were built in the 1940s. The levadas and their associated walkways are a great tourist attraction for Madeira.
