Bacillus infernus baterium, illustration. This is an anaerobic thermophilic bacterium that was discovered in 1995 from a core sample from kilometres below the Taylorsville Triassic Basin in Virginia, USA. It is the only strictly anaerobic species in the genus Bacillus.
