Paesina stone. Polished section of Paesina stone, a type of limestone only found in Tuscany, Italy. The brown colouration comes from oxides of iron and manganese that have infiltrated the limestone in ground water through small cracks. The cracks were introduced by deformation and diagenesis of the rock as it compacted. The shapes that are produced gives Paesina stone its alternative names of ruin marble and landscape or picture stone.
