Gossypium flowers. The red and yellow species shown here are Levant cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) and tree cotton (Gossypium arboreum). Artwork from 'Illustrations of the botany and other branches of the natural history of the Himalayan Mountains, and of the Flora of Cashmere' (1839) by the British botanist John Forbes Royle (1799-1858). Royle was initially a surgeon, but turned to the study of botany and geology. For many years, he served as superintendent of the East India Company's botanic garden at Saharanpur, in northern India, in the Himalayas.
