Night portrait north to Central Pier 'big Wheel' and red white lights Blackpool Tower reflecting sand, Blackpool Illuminations
Night view from the beach south of the Central Pier. The Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32m (108ft) tall 'Big Wheel', illuminated and reflecting in a sea water beach pool. The Sky Flyer is a recent flying machine ride, where tourists sit in seats which rise and spin, on the promenade near the pier's entrance. Blackpool Tower has computer-controlled changing lights during the 2014 Illuminations. Here we see red white tower lights reflecting in a pool of water on the beach.
