They revive the dearly remembered Old-Fashioned Garden of years past, for unlike the formal arrangement of plants for color effects alone, the beauties of the Old-Fashioned Garden required close, familiar and individual ac- quaintance. Each plant has a grace, a beauty or sweetness peculiarly its own, and commands admira- tion from the lover of nature by virtue of its individ- ual characteristics. While the carpet bedding reveals at one glance jts beauty as a whole, the herbaceous border keeps those who care to search out its treas- ures interested as long as they can stay, ever showing something new, and inviting a closer investigation from the most casual observer. This form of garden- ing is inexpensive, and requires very little time for the establishment of the most permanent plants. The variety of color and form that can be used in the border is almost endless, and gives an opportunity for the display of many of our native species, which are valued in other countries as among the most beau- tiful flowers in cultivation, but here in their native country are comparatiyely neglected ; but these hardy plants are fast attaining popularity, and to meet the growing demand we have, with considerable labor and time, collected together only such plants as exhibit the greatest contrast of color with profusion of bloom and vigorous growth —plants t
