Economy Effected. Practically all of those difficulties coming under the category of the mechanics of the oil burning sys- tem have been disposed of by con- stantly experimenting and perfect- ing the apparatus; and the losses which have heretofore been occasioned by the unbumed coal gases escaping into the air have been materially re- duced by the substitution of fuel oil for coal. It is possible for the fireman to determine in just what proportions the air and oil must be mixed when placed under pressure to allow a rapid and com- plete combustion in the fire box. If the boilers are needed on short notice, they can be brought to full capacity in less time and with much less effort than where coal is used as fuel. It is also found that the boilers can stand a much heavier strain without in- jury. Comparing the heating values of coal and oil, it is found by engineers that eighty per cent of the heating value of fuel oil is used, whereas, only sixty- five per cent of the heat derived froin the burning of coal can be held in the boiler long enough to be utilized, a fact due, of course, to the fact that the com- bustion is more rapid and more complete in the case of fuel oil, and for that rea- son the heat from the latter is available for a longer period of time during its journey through the boiler chambers and around the water tubes. The heat- ing value of fuel oil is found to run be- tween 18,000 and 19,000 British thermal units per pound, while coal only approxi- mates between 11,500 and 14,000 B. t. u. per pound. This variation can be easily explained by the fact that there is less foreign matter, such as dirt and slag, to displace the combustible material
