Examining the surface of micro electronic devices using x-ray photo electron spectroscopy


Irradiating sample with a beam of monochromatic x-rays under ultra high vacuum. The resulting electrons are measured to give the chemical and electronic state of the elements on the surface of the sample material. Uses include showing surface contamination, uniformity of composition and measuring changes in the surface chemistry of a material after chemical and physical treatments.
