The shaft to bedriven has recesses in which are pawls or frictiondevices, two rings being placed on the sleeve hav-ing internal ratchets when pawls are used, whilebands are connected to the rings and to a frame sothat when the frame is moved downward one of therings on the sleeve will move the balance wheel, whileas the frame moves upward the other ring drives thebalance wheel, the opposite pawls or friction deviceslipping over their respective rings alternately withthe contrary movements.
