He went to NewYork city in 1847, to enUst for theservice, but was persuaded by hisbrother to return home. He wasthe captain of the HickoryGuards of Madison in 1861, andon the breaking out of the Civil War,he wanted to enter the service l^utwas urged by Governor Randall toretain his position on the bench, ashe could do more for the State andNation in that capacity, than inservice in the field. He reluctantlyconsented, yet he gave much aidin recruiting and drilling troops forthe Judge Luther Swift Dixon. Judge Dixon possessed a genial, sympathetic and kindly nature; was plainmannered and affected nothing; was at all times frank and courteous and hada keen sense of humor; was fond of anecdote and reminiscence and was adelightful companionable man. Many incidents are given as to many actsof generosity. He was one of the leading lawyers of his time. We quotefrom the memorial read before the bar association of the^^State at his death:Among the many distinguished names on the roll of our-profession in Wis-consin, none shines with brighter lustre than his, none is more prominentlyassociated with the judicial liistory; and he has graven deep and lasting Unesof influence upon the jurisprudence of the State.
