Sir Humphrey Gilbert abord The Frigate "Squirrel" before she sank without trace with all hands 9 September 1583; Black and White Illustration; On coming within hailing distance of the Golden Hind, the Squirrel's sister ship on the voyage, Gilbert is enjoined to transfer to the larger and more stable ship. He declined and replied, "We are as near to heaven by sea as by land". That night the Squirrel disappeared with all hands.
