Ho Chi Minh led the Việt Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the Communist-ruled Democratic Republic of Vietnam in north Vietnam in1945. He was the first president of Vietnam and Chairman of the Communist Party of Vietnam. His body lies in state in a gray granite mausoleum on Ba Dinh square in Hanoi. The date on the wall in the background celebrates the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the republic of Vietnam. A male and female custodian tends to the area in front of the mausoleum, which is decorated with red Vietnamese flags.
