Memorial plaque to , Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg. All 3 perished on an 1897 expedition to reach the North Pole by balloon. The hydrogen balloon lifted off from Svalbard in July 1897 losing hydrogen quickly and crashing onto pack ice after only 2 days. They survived the crash unhurt. Exhausted and with the Arctic winter closing in they made it to Kvitoya (white island) in Svalbard and died there
