STATUS OF THE SCREW-WORM (Cochliomyia hominivorax) IN THE SOUTHWEST During the period October 5-11, a total of 69,327,450 sterile flies was released over an area of 63,000 square miles in Texas, with 7,000 square miles covered in the average overwintering area of New Mexico. Release rate was 800 sterile flies per square mile over the general area, with additional flies being released in areas favorable to screw-worm populations. A total of 1,638 screw-worm cases was reported during the period. New counties and parishes reported infested were Nacogdoches, TEXAS; Calcasieu, LOUISIANA; and Custer, Kingfisher, Okfuskee and McCurtain, OKLAHOMA. (Anim. Dis. Erad. Div.)..
