Zech comments that buyers in New Orleans have been worrying about a railroad strike at All Saints' day. He says that while most of the south- ern trade is using San Francisco mums this year, Zech & Mann have a consid- erable number of good advance orders for roses and carnations to go to New Orleans on the nights of October 28 and 29. The sales of Schiller the Florist have increased steadily for many years. Man- ager George Asmus states that while the west side store is only holding its own this season, in the face of much unem- ployment in that district, the north side store is showing an increase of about one-third. Mr. Asmus has great confi- dence in the future of the Wilson ave- nue district. A new telephone exchange has been opened in the downtown section and a number of the instruments in whole- sale houses have been changed from Central to Dearborn. Visitors. Charles Hughes and wife were here from Hillsdale, Mich., last week and Mr. Hughes renewed acquaintances in the market. Many years ago he was active in the wholesale field here. E. W. McLellan, of Burlingame and San Francisco, spent several days in Chicago last week. J. A.
