Israeli soldiers fired tear gas into protesters and into civilian homes during protests in Hebron on Friday. In the West Bank city of Hebron, hundreds of Palestinians came out into the streets to protest during the “Day of Rage”. The demonstration in Hebron was a response to the on-going violence and turbulence in Jerusalem at Al Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. Palestinians marched towards an Israeli army checkpoint in the city, demanding that Al Aqsa mosque be only accessible to Muslim worshippers. During the past week Israeli soldiers have repeatedly stormed the Al Aqsa compound, including the mosque. Muslim worshippers and guards at the mosque were injured by Israeli forces, while the mosque was heavily damaged by sound bombs and tear gas. Israeli soldiers often escort Israeli settlers and right-wing Israeli activists and politicians into the Al Aqsa compound, which infuriates Palestinian Muslims. The Al Aqsa compound has been a flashpoint of violence between Israelis and Palestinians for decades, as both Jewish Israelis and Muslim Palestinians invoke the right to pray at this holy site.
