Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in Swartekill, New York. Escaping slavery in 1826 with her daughter, Sojourner became a prominent African-American abolitionist, women's rights activist, and itinerant evangelist in the United States.
