The materials of crown glassused to be, fine sand, by measure5 parts, or by weight 10; groundkelp by measure 11 parts, or byweight Itjj; but instead of kelp,soda ash is now generally 6 to 8 cwts. of sand, lime,and sodaash, mixed together inwooden boxes with a shovel, are thrown on the sole of a large reverberatory, such as isrepresented in the article Copper. Here the mixture is well worked together, with ironpaddles, flat shovels, and rakes with long handles; the area of this furnace being about6 feet square, and the height 2 feet. The h
