In1836 Mr. Goodrich engaged Hawthorne to edit the American Magazine of Useful and EntertainingKnowledge, at a salary of $500 per year, which,however, was not fully paid; and Hawthorne alsowrote for the company which Mr, Goodrich man-aged a Universal History, for $100. This be-came the basis of Peter Parleys famous series ofhistorical and other books. In 1838 Hawthorne be-came engaged to Sophia Amelia Peabody, of Sa-lem, of whom, in writing to her sister, he says: She is a flower to be worn in no mans bosom,but was lent from heaven to show the possibili-ties of the human soul; and to whom he was mar-ried July 9, 1842, at Boston, Mass.
