Hunted Fin Whale with Harpoon and child
Icelandic government issued licenses for a commercial fin whale hunt in addition to the continuing scientific program in Oct 2006 for one year. This is after a long ban on hunting fin whales. The government granted whalers rights to hunt and sell 9 fin whales. Fin whales are considered endangered on a worldwide basis, however, that is not the case in Icelandic waters. The numbers in the ocean around the island have grown to a stable level.
