Saturn V first stage vertical assembly, 1967. Placing of the liquid oxygen tank on the intertank and fuel tank of the first stage (S-IC) for the Saturn V rocket during stacking in the vehicle assembly building (VAB) at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF), Louisiana, USA. Developed here and at the nearby Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), the Saturn V was the launch vehicle for NASA's Apollo program of manned missions to the Moon. The Apollo program took place between 1961 and 1975. The Saturn V was one of the most powerful rockets ever made. Fully fuelled, the 110-metre high rocket weighed over 3000 tonnes. The rocket's first stage was the stage used during take-off. Photographed in November 1967. For a sequence showing the stacking of the S-IC components, see images C039/1691 to C039/1694.
