Insulin production. Scientists working in a facility for the production of recombinant human insulin. Insulin is used to treat insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus, a medical condition where the body does not produce enough insulin hormone itself. Recombinant insulin is obtained from micro-organisms, in this case yeast, which have been genetically engineered to produce insulin. The yeast is fermented in these large metal vats. Manufacture of insulin is strictly controlled to ensure the purity of the finished product. Photographed in 2004 at Biocon, a biotechnology company in Bangalore, India.
