Oak Ridge, TN was created by the US Government to house the top secret Manhattan Project. Out of the East Tennessee valley, the town sprung up over night to 75,000 people from across the world. The top secret city was militarily guarded and maintained behind a fence with security gates. Employees and families had plenty of recreational activities to keep them happy but they fought mud every day -- wooden sidewalks had to be installed to help people get about above the mud. Several years after the atomic bomb the town was turned over to civilian corporations to explore atomic energy.
