The Baroque city hall (1662-1663) of Kaprijke, Belgium on a beautiful spring morning
In 1425 the first mention was made of an alderman's house in Kaprijke. This was renewed several times. The current building was built in 1662-1663 and was designed in Baroque style. In 1881 the building was seriously damaged by fire. The building was restored in 1885 and restorations continued in later years, most recently in 1998. It is a building on a rectangular floor plan with more recent additions to the left and right. The main building is strictly symmetrical with a raised main entrance, which can be reached by stairs on the left and right. Above, a decorated oculus and an elegant baroque facade. The main building is closed off on the left and right with a stepped gable. There is a baroque roof rider. Since the building has also served as a court of justice, there is a justice scene entitled The Last Judgment, made by Pieter Van Damme and purchased in 1760.
