Accounting machines for 1940 US Census. Women handling punch cards that are being sorted by alphabetic accounting machine equipped with a summary punch mechanism. The machines are from IBM, and are an early form of computer processing. The 1940 US Census used twelve machines of this Type. This population survey was the sixteenth per-decade (decennial) census held in the USA. These machines were the latest in a series of machines used to record and collate census data, ranging from mechanical sorters and tabulators, through to modern electronic computers.
