View N of excavations at Tell Abu Dhahir on the W bank of the Tigris River, NW of Mosul in Northern Iraq, with Babneet Island & village to rear. Part of the Eski Mosul Dam Salvage Project: excavations were taking place for 60km along the Tigris in the Zammar Region. The British Archaeological Expedition to Iraq dig house was in Babneet village which contained a ruined C19th castle (qasr). There is a large pottery vessel in the tell (mound) section & a rubble wall exposed in plan. Remains from the following periods were found: Hassuna/Halaf/Ubaid, Uruk & Ninevite V. This photo was taken in March 1983; the site, island & village have since been submerged by the Mosul Dam Lake used for hydro electricity & irrigation.
