Gleanings in bee culture . th regulations gazetted , 1912. Aftei the close of the present sea-son this Iegulation will be strictly enforced. QUEENS LAYING ABOVE THE BROOD-XEST. Mr. M. Shallard, p. 798, Dec. 15, that a good strain of Italians will notlay above the brood-nest. Well, I knowa few good beekeepers in this part of Aus-tralia; and out of the lot I have heard is only one other who Avants the queento be confined to one set of combs. I fol-low the example of most beekeepers the head of every queen Avhichdoes not put brood into tAvo stories inspring. One can not secure a strong enoughAvorker force from one set of brood-combs(Langstroth) to get the best returns. Inthe apiaries giAing the highest yield, hivesare tieied uji three and four stories higliAvithout a queen-excluder. In a letter re-ceived Feb. 1 from Mr. Ballinger, Avho isrunning an apiary on shares Avith me, theyield of one four-story hive for the monthof -TanuaiA- is aiven: Extracted, .Tan. 7, SO AlGUST 1, 1913. -Tlie apiary in the new location, four r(i\v> lbs.; Jan. 17. 120 lbs.: Jan. 24. 90 lbs.;Jan 31, 90 lbs.; and still going total of 390 pounds for one monthoould not possibly have been gathered l>ythe bees from one single is no need to restrict the queen; ifher workers are as long-lived as they shouldbe. there will soon be so many honey-carri-ers that they thems?lves will restrict theegg-laying by filling the cells with honey. Since writing the above, my son, owingto a serious accident to Mr. Ballinger, hasgone there to run tl:e bees till Mr. B. hassufificiently recovered. My son writes thatthe yield of the eight best colonies from thel)eiiinning of January, when the flow com-menced, to Februarv 14, is as follows: Hive No. 51, 600lbs.; hive No. 260. 600lbs.: hive Xo. 75, 480 lbs.; hive Xo. 18. 600lbs.; hive Xo. 248, 540 lbs.; hive Xo. lbs.; hive Xo. 127, 540 lbs.; hive 480 lbs.
