The Grand Army of the Republic was organized at Decatur, Illi-nois, April 6, 1866 by Dr. B. F. Stephenson, of Springfield, who hadserved as Surgeon Fourteenth Illinois Infantry, and at the close ofthe war, returned to his practice in Springfield, where, in February,1866, he first suggested the idea of this organization, and made thedraft of a Ritual.
