Steroid secreting cell. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cell involved with steroid synthesis and secretion (steroidogenesis). It contains many mitochondria (dark grey, oval) and abundant membranes of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER, dark lines). These organelles supply the necessary enzymes for the assembly of steroid molecules, beginning with cholesterol inside the mitochondria. When fully synthesised by the smooth ER, most steroids leave the cell by diffusion. Magnification: x2,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
