Blue plaque commemorating Camille Pissarro's stay at 77a Westow Hill, Upper Norwood, (now Crystal Palace) London, England

Camille Pissarro was living on the outskirts of Paris when the Franco-Prussian war broke out in 1870 and, after the invasion of France by the Prussian army, he fled with his family to Brittany and then London. He already had relatives in the Norwood area and moved to 77a Westow Hill, Upper Norwood (now usually known as Crystal Palace). He made a number of paintings of the Norwood and Sydenham area before the mass development of suburbia, eventually returning to France in 1890. Blue plaques are erected to recognise those citizens who have contributed to the world around them.
