By specific .toxines (aplitha, Fig. 51; rinderpest, scurvy, and diphtberia of calves aud of fowls). Moreover, an ulcerousStomatitis appears as a general phenomenon in raetal poisoning, especially in mercurial poisoning. In so-called diplitheria of calvesand fowls, cronpous and diplitheritic infiammations on the mucousmembrane of tbe moutli and pharynx form the most importantSymptom of tlie disease (see these diseases). In rinderpest, largeedematous swellings of tbe tougue are observed. Tbe tongue may Fig. 51. a. Aplitha. Furtbermore,a considerable enlargement and prolapsus of tbe tougue may occurin consequence of pblegmonous Stomatitis. Judgment.—In caustic irritation of tbe anterior part of tbealimentary tract, if deatb does not follow at once, it is necessaryto determine if secondary processes bave arisen from tbe corrodedor necrotic parts of tbe mucous membrane; for it is only suchsecondary processes, and not tbe poisoning itself, wbicb rendersthe meat dangerous. Tbe otber infiammations of tbe oral cavityare witbout independent significance (for judgment, see under tbedifferent diseases in question).
