Graves and headstones of former residents and families in the oldest part of the Victorian cemetery of Burnley Lancashire

The huge growth of the population in Burnley Lancashire in the 18th and 19th century, because of the cotton trade, meant that church graveyards were being quickly filled so the Town Council provided burial grounds for the population which are still used. This is the oldest part of this cemetery and only the wealthy could afford to erect these ornate memorials of the great and the good of the Town. Some are now dangerous to approach because of the insecure nature of the edifices
