Leh, Jammu and Kashmir, India- October 1, 2014: The Himalayan Marmots enjoying biscuit at Leh, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The Himalayan Marmots (Marmota Himalayan) are large ground squirrels about the size of a large housecat, belonging to the rodent family, closely related to the woodchuck, the hoary marmot and the yellow bellied marmot. It is a furry creature with dark chocolate-brown coat with contrasting yellow patches on its face and chest. It is one of the highest elevation-dwelling mammals in the world found in alpine grasslands throughout the Himalayas and on the Tibetan Plateau at elevation from 3,500 to 5,200 m. They live in colonies of varying sizes from four to forty in deep burrows that can keep them warm even in subzero temperatures. They hibernate during the winter months when the terrain is covered in deep snow and sunlight is scanty.
