COMMANDER AND PRESIDENT It seemed likely that New York would be the nextplace to be attacked by the English. Therefore Wash-ington left part of his troops in Boston and with the resthurried to New York. Here raw recruits joined his forceuntil it numbered eighteen thousand. Let us leave the army at work building defenses forNew York and go back to the Continental Congress inPhiladelphia. You will remember that last petition whichthe Continental Congress sent to England. As usual itwas received with contempt. The King would do nothingfor his disobedient colonists. And what was more, toend their rebellion, he had hired German troops to go toAmerica and do this work for him in short order. The colonists were outraged. All thoughts of peacewere at an end. Daily the break between England andher American colonies grew wider, until finally, on the 4thof July, 1776, a Declaration of Independence was adoptedby Congress, and the thirteen English colonies becamethe United States of America.
