This branch of the Ruthven family, claimingdirect descent from John, third Earl of Gowrie, havealways used the Gowrie crest. (An old seal belong-ing to them is reproduced here.). The issue raised by this narrative from thearchives of one of the members of the Ruthvenfamily, and the direct reference to it practicallyconfirming it, by that eminent novelist, G. P.
