The Patton street car motor that is now inoperation on the Calumet electric railway linesat 07th street, Chicago, promises a happy solu-tion of the rapit transit problem, as it is equallywell suited to the crowded city streets and thelong lines through sparsely settled districts, asthe smaller cost of insulation and the economy ofoperation, together with its independence of a baseof supplies, or a central power station, fit it forall kinds of rapid transit lines. This motor is the result of several years workand study to discover and perfect a system for. SYSTEM OP STREET CAR PROPULSION. intramural traflfic which would supersede thetrolley and be devoid of objectional features. The perfected motor consists of a combinationof gas engine, electric generator, storage batteryand an electric railway motor, all arranged in themost compact and convenient manner, makinga simple, reliable and economical machinery is enclosed in a portion of the carand after being once started requires no particu-lar attention during the days run, as the engineis entirely automatic and the storage batteryserves to control the generator when the motor isnot taking current. The gas engine is of the vertical type and islocated in the center of the car and supporteddirectly by the truck, the floor of the car beingcut away for this purpose.
