5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (March 23, 2017) The fleet replenishment oiler USNS Walter S. Diehl (T-AO 193), foreground, and the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), conduct a replenishment-at-sea. Makin Island, the flagship of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, is deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
