Scanning electron microscope cathode. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a damaged cathode for an old scanning electron microscope. The cathode, or electron gun, is a component that produces the electron beams used by the scanning electron microscope. This cathode contains lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6), an inorganic ceramic material that has a very low work function, which means that it takes very little energy to initiate an electron flow from its surface. This cathode has burnt out and needs to be replaced. Magnification: x170 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
